Sunglasses lenses can be made from plastic or polycarbonate materials and are available in polarized options. It is important to know what to look for specifically regarding types of lenses, coatings, frames and quality:

Spec-Savers recommends that in order to provide adequate protection for your eyes, sunglasses should:

  • Have a 99 to 100 % filter of both UV-A and UV-B radiation;
  • Screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light;
  • Have lenses perfectly matched in color and free of distortion and imperfection;
  • Have lenses that are grey, green or brown.

Polarized

Both polarized lenses and anti-reflective coating cut reflected glare. Polarized lenses in particular are popular with those who play water sports. Anti-reflective coatings reduce glare caused by light reflecting off the back surface of your sunglass lenses. Polarization is unrelated to UV protection, so you still need to ensure UV absorption of the lenses.  These lenses are very soothing for eyes that are sensitive to the sun, and are highly recommended.
